Organizations to advertise themselves make their website accessible in the World Wide Web (WWW) using web hosting service mechanism. There are two types of web-hosting services – Virtual Private server and Shared web hosting server. In Virtual Private server the computer server is partitioned into many servers with full operating system that gives us a view that each server is capable of running on it self and can be rebooted independently. Whereas, in a shared web hosting server several websites are there on one single web server that is in the network. This web server is partitioned to differentiate between the websites. The different types of Virtual Private server are managed hosting, unmanaged hosting and unmetered hosting and the shared web hosting can be either Name-based on IP based. The Virtual private servers are generally used to solve the differences between the shared web hosting services and the dedicated ones. It is considered to be very economical as it allows many customers to use the resources of a computer maintaining good privacy levels. As the Virtual Private servers have independent operating systems, the users can install or update the software required that is compatible with that operating system. The shared hosting is susceptible to the DDOS attack i.e., if a single IP is attacked, all the websites of that IP will go offline until the attack is cleared. The other disadvantages of shared web hosting server are that it doesn’t support secure web pages like the HTTP or the SSL; the system will fail if the DNS is malfunctioning and also they require the hosts to send their host name along with the request made. The virtual private servers can also be used to enhance the security of the web hosting mechanism as they ensure that they can run software with security threats without affecting the server. |
